「Got it!」

The Stolen Painting Mystery on the Ferry

Halo and Bobo, along with their family, boarded a ferry from Taitung to Green Island, filled with anticipation for the journey ahead. Bobo, holding his small telescope, watched the seagulls soaring in the sky and asked, “Halo, do you know what interesting places are on Green Island?”

Halo smiled and replied, “Green Island has many historical sites and beautiful diving spots. Most importantly, this trip should be peaceful, and we can finally relax.”

However, just as they were about to enjoy this serene journey, a loud siren suddenly sounded on the ferry. The captain’s voice came over the loudspeaker, “Attention, all passengers! A valuable painting, Spring on Green Island, has been stolen! Please cooperate with the investigation!”

“Oh~ I see!” Bobo perked up at the mention of the missing painting. “Looks like we have some work to do, Halo!”

Halo immediately slipped into detective mode, analyzing the situation. “The ferry has stopped, which means the thief is likely still on board, and the painting must be hidden somewhere. We need to find it before the culprit has a chance to escape or destroy it.”

Investigation and Initial Observations

The crew began checking passengers’ belongings one by one, and tension filled the air. While everyone appeared nervous, Halo noticed some subtle behaviors:

  • Art Enthusiast: This man seemed particularly anxious, talking constantly about the importance of the painting and repeatedly asking the captain if there was any progress in the search.

  • Photographer: Carrying a lot of camera equipment, he frequently glanced at his gear and occasionally cast furtive looks at the other passengers.

  • Painting Transporter: A man claiming to be responsible for delivering the painting to Green Island. Surprisingly, he appeared calmer than everyone else, stating that he had no idea about the theft and insisted that his only responsibility was to deliver the painting to its destination.

The crew conducted a thorough search of the passengers but found no signs of the missing painting. As time passed, everyone grew increasingly anxious.

Discovery of a Key Clue

Halo and Bobo continued their search, examining every possible hiding place on the ferry. Suddenly, in the storage area at the back of the ferry, Bobo spotted a fishing rod case. “Halo, this case looks ordinary, but could it be used to hide the painting?”

“Got it!” Halo quickly checked the case and found a rolled-up painting inside. It was indeed the missing Spring on Green Island!

But things weren’t that simple. Halo thought, “The thief wouldn’t be foolish enough to hide the painting somewhere so obvious. This might be a setup to frame someone else.”

The Culprit's Real Plan

Halo began to think more deeply: the fishing rod case was inconspicuous, and anyone could have put something inside it. But why hide the painting here? Who would have the opportunity to conceal it amidst the chaos?

At this point, Halo turned his attention to the man responsible for transporting the painting. Unlike the others, he seemed unusually calm and appeared to be subtly observing the reactions of those around him. A thought struck Halo: “This might not be a simple theft, but rather an inside job!”

Halo decided to observe the transporter more closely. Although the man appeared cooperative, Halo noticed he occasionally glanced towards the fishing rod case, which heightened his suspicion.

“He’s too calm, almost as if he’s prepared for this,” Halo whispered to Bobo.

“Oh~ I see! You mean he planned the theft himself?” Bobo’s eyes lit up with realization.

Revealing the Truth and Gathering Evidence

To find decisive evidence, Halo decided to ask the transporter some key questions. He inquired about the painting’s insurance, and the man’s vague responses only made Halo more suspicious.

“You seem to know a lot about the painting’s value and even mentioned insurance. Isn’t that outside your concern?” Halo pointed out.

Just then, Bobo had an idea. “Halo, if he planned to sell the painting and pretend it was stolen, couldn’t he then collect a large insurance payout?”

Halo nodded in agreement. “Exactly, that’s the heart of his plan. He intended to sell the painting on the black market and collect an insurance payout through this so-called ‘theft’.”

However, the man remained composed. “Do you have any evidence? The painting was found in the fishing rod case, which isn’t mine.”

Halo had already prepared for this. He had found a small fingerprint on the painting’s wrapping, and it matched the man’s fingerprint from earlier when he handled the painting.

“Here’s the proof!” Halo declared. “Your fingerprint is on the painting’s wrapping, and you tried to frame someone else. The painting went missing while under your responsibility—this isn’t a coincidence.”

Faced with the undeniable evidence, the man finally admitted to his crime. His plan was to secretly sell the painting while pretending it had been stolen in transit, thus collecting a hefty insurance payout. But Halo and Bobo’s keen deduction skills foiled his scheme.

Case Closed

“We did it again!” Bobo said proudly. “This case was really complicated, but we cracked it in the end!”

Halo smiled and said, “As long as Detective Halo is around, there’s no case we can’t solve!”

With the culprit caught and the painting safely recovered, the crisis on the ferry was over. The ship set sail once more, and the detective duo had once again demonstrated their wit and courage, bringing the case to a successful close.
